Last weekend we visited Исаакиевский собор (St. Isaac’s Cathedral) and while the inside was indeed beautiful, and the view from the top cloudy but impressive, my favorite part of the visit was this picture from an exhibit on the cathedral during WWII and the blockade. As you can see, during the blockade the area in front of the cathedral was turned into a cabbage field. As cabbages are among my favorite brassicas, this photo was just too good to pass up. Just look at the size of them! I also love the contrast between the huge, ornate cathedral and the humble cabbage field.
